IEESC Ph.D. student Jiapei Chen studies regional energy systems planning under climate change. Her research explores emerging energy problems and challenges of greenhouse gas mitigation in Canada caused by a changing climate. The research aims to improve conventional energy modeling methods, which are currently not capable of reflecting multiple levels of uncertain information. According to Jiapei, “Canada has ambitious climate targets at the provincial and federal levels. It is important to seek judicious and practical emission-related policies and strategies to achieve government commitments. This research is important because it can provide many alternatives under different climate scenarios and their impacts on the economy and environment, and thus provide scientific bases for decision making.”
Jiapei’s research is supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council Strategic Project Grant “Management of clean energy transition and associated risks through a multi-dimensional optimization approach” and the Canada Research Chairs Program.
